Everyone lies on a CV – what’s yours?

It is a well-known fact that most individuals will lie when writing their CV. The lie doesn’t necessarily have to be the biggest lie. It could be something quite small!!
Perhaps you have changed a job title, embellished one of your roles, or lengthened the time period you worked at a particular company. All of these are still classified as lies but the big question is why you felt it was necessary to do.
Were you worried about how a prospective employer would view you? Did you think that it would hinder your chances at that particular company? Perhaps you thought the recruiter may have viewed your CV differently if you hadn’t made that change. Perhaps you didn’t have the correct qualifications for the role you were applying for.
However, how would you answer if the individual interviewing you pushed for more information on that particular fact that you changed? Do you know how you would explain it? Could you explain it?
You must remember that lying is an illegal activity and many organisations are now employing staff to verify facts quoted on your CV. Remember too that some facts will be discovered when employers check references after making a provisional job offer.
In the worst-case scenarios, conjuring up false references and qualifications can lead to you being banged up behind bars for deception and fraud.
So do sing your praises on your CV but don’t be deceptive. One day those lies will be found out and depending on the degree of the lie told, the consequences could be fateful for your career.
